Introduction to Latin Language.
This Latin course is the first half of a two semester introduction to Latin. Basic elements of Grammar, structure, and vocabulary of Latin language. Translating short non original and original Latin texts into English will introduce students in fundamental features of the Roman world. Elementary information on famous writers like Cicero, Sallust, and Livius, and poets like Vergil, Horace, and Ovid as a framework of the study of the language. Use of dictionaries, Grammars, first contact with critical editions.
The students will recognize basic forms, syntax, and vocabulary of Latin language. They will be able to declinate nouns (5 declensions), epithets and pronouns, and conjugate verbs in Indicative (Active Voice). They will be able to understand short and simple Latin texts and translate them into English (or into their mother tongue). They will know how to use reliable Latin-English dictionaries, so that they have access to original texts.
