Ancient Greeks at War: Xenophon
(BAAG175) - GRAMMATIKI KARLA AND SELINI PSOMA
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
We will focus on the Greek author of the 4th BC, Xenophon. Xenophon has written a huge corpus of different works: The so-called Socratic works (Memorabilia, Symposium, Defense of Socrates ), the first war-memoir (the Anabasis ) and the first historical romance (the Cyropaedia). He continued the history of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides compiling the work Hellenica and also he wrote the first encomium for the Spartan King Agesilaos (Agesilaos). Moreover he wrote technical treatises (on horsemanship, hunting, leadership, finance, and the Spartan constitution).
Over the course we will read selected passages of The Education of Cyrus, Anabasis and Hellenica in Greek against the background of various historical, narratological and linguistic approaches. We will cover structural themes (e.g. episodic structure), rhetorical and linguistic issues (e.g. speech representation and tense usage) and we will shed light on the most important historical events. The main areas of study will be issues such as leadership, women and war, religion, war-discourses.
The course is intended to provide a solid foundation in Xenophon’s language and themes. But it will also have an open and exploratory character, with ample room for discussion.
