Introduction to Lexicography: Linguistic theory meets the corpus (8th semester)

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the theory and practice of Lexicography and familiarize them with lexicographically-geared corpus research and analysis. The course focuses on monolingual English and Greek Lexicography occasionally veering into bilingual dictionaries. It adopts a linguistic perspective to lexicography whereby linguistic theory on all levels of analysis, including syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and socio-linguistic parameters, contributes to the designing specifications and compiling of dictionaries as well as to the writing of entries. The syllabus includes topics that are central to lexicographic research and applications: the organization and presentation of the entry, the different types of definitions available to the lexicographer, the identification and discrimination of senses and their relating and ordering through prototypes, metaphor and metonymy, the characterization of entries and senses in terms of social relevance (e.g. taboo, offensive), dictionary ethics and prescriptiveness, user profile, and finally the collection of data and examples for dictionary making.

In dealing with the topics above, students are introduced to the basic source and methodological tool of modern Lexicography (and of many other linguistic applications), the linguistic corpus. To this effect, the course offers a training seminar on the use of the corpus through the Sketchengine software as well as hands-on practice in class on existing entries and on compiling new ones. Course requirements include two corpus-based projects on identifying senses, recruiting appropriate examples, and compiling dictionary entries. Student evaluation is based on these projects and a final exam.
