This course aims at introducing students to the basic critical terms, as well the various styles and themes of English fiction, from the 18^th Century onwards. The short stories and novels listed below will be studied in the context of the cultural and historical background. Moreover, reference will be made to the various literary trends and movements that influenced each writer and shaped the style of fiction in each period.

The course takes the form of weekly planned lectures that allow for dialogue to develop in class. Besides the set texts, the study materials include biographies of the authors and study questions. Evaluation is based on the final exam where students are asked to answer on 2 out of the 6 texts on the syllabus. There will also be a mid-term writing test for which students can get 1-2 points extra credit on top of their final grade.
