                                                            Course Description

The course aims at examining various fictional genres in a diachronic framework and taking into consideration their relevant historical and social parameters.  The students will become familiarised with the basic elements of fiction, a vital tool in analysing the particular literary genre. The introduction includes a short survey of the genealogy of fiction. An analysis of an excerpt from a renowned British fictional text of the 18th century will follow. The rest of the course will focus on an analysis of selected 20th century British short stories and a 19th century English novel.
