Using poetry from enduring works in the history of English literature, this class will equip you with the tools necessary to approach, evaluate and enjoy this infamously peculiar and wonderful medium of language. Poetry is the most concentrated mode of literary expression. In poetry everything participates in the experience: words in all their meanings, connotations and allusions, their sounds, rhymes and rhythms, their visual arrangement on the page and the traditions that shape them into poetic forms. The course aims to attune you to the artistry and traditions that inform poetry, providing a critical vocabulary for their appreciation, analysis and study.
