Through the chosen texts, you will read the impression contemporary life makes on a character and discover how the authors of monologues can offer a fresh voice, a mixture of tragic tones with comic and absurd ones, to attract their audience. We will read and discuss 8 monologues with themes from great traditions in the theater: matters of life and death, love and loss, and the passing of time, but also with themes from contemporary concerns: sexuality, political domination, environmental issues, artistic inspiration, etc.--monologues that spark an immediate connection to the material. You will be asked to do several exercises that will eventually lead to the creation of a final monologue which you could perform at the end of the semester, in an audition room or on stage.  This is a creative writing class, so weekly attendance is mandatory.
