Theory and Criticism of Literature Spring 2025 (Section Kas-O)

(63ΛΥ06) -  Ισαβέλλα Βούζα

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

This course introduces students to key approaches in literary theory as well as methods for practicing literary criticism. Throughout the semester, students will examine a range of major theoretical traditions, including Formalism, Structuralism, Poststructuralism, Deconstruction, and Marxism, alongside recent theoretical developments in Feminist theory, Queer theory, Postcolonial theory, Ecocriticism, New Materialism, and Digital Humanities. The course aims to help students understand, analyse, and critically evaluate each literary approach, as well as equip them with the analytical, methodological and critical tools to conduct literary criticism. Using a hands-on, practical approach including in-class examples and exercises, students will refine their skills in critical and literary analysis to develop a strong understanding of the relationship between theory and practice. Examining various methods of interpreting literature, the class will address such questions as: How do different perspectives influence the way one approaches a literary text? In what ways do these perspectives provide different, nuanced dimensions to familiar categories like “text”, “author”, or indeed “literature”? What is the pertinence of literary theory and criticism in today’s cultural and political climate? Students will be encouraged to engage with the broader questions and issues raised in the theories studied, and reflect on their own practices of reading and ways of interpreting literature. The course eventually aims to help students develop a deeper appreciation and enjoyment of theoretical and literary texts alike.
