Therapeutics

(54428) -  Prof. Meletios Athanasios Dimopoulos

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The course of Clinical Therapeutics is primarily concerned with therapeutic decision making in such areas as oncology, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, infectious disease, endocrinology, neurology, and the critically ill. While the orientation of the course is clinical, such pharmacologic issues as receptor interaction, pharmacokinetics and dynamics, drug interactions, specificity and selectivity will be analyzed in the context of specific organ system involvement and treatment of disease states. Emphasis is placed on clinical case discussions supplemented by more didactic lectures and panel discussions. By the end of the course, students will have reviewed the pharmacology of the drugs used to treat these disease states, and critically analyzed the decision processes to create and implement therapeutic plans. Moreover, the course of Clinical Therapeutics provides an overview of key concepts and methods in therapeutic communication and the clinical relationship. The relationship between therapist and patient is one of the central concerns of contemporary theories of therapeutic change. This course explores the relationship between therapist and patient from the perspectives of contemporary psychodynamics and of person-centered theories. It provides various perspectives on transference and countertransference, the working alliance and the therapeutic partnership, and how to work with these dynamics in the clinical setting. The course of Clinical Therapeutics is the culmination of knowledge gained in previous years to prepare students for the practice of pharmaceutical care on clinical rotations.
