Descrizione del Corso

The Medical Chemistry Course aims at introducing the first-year medical students to the chemistry of biologically important organic and inorganic molecules, as well as to the structure and function of biomolecules. Understanding of the basic principles of chemistry is essential for medical practice.

The topics cover the fundamentals of:

  • General chemistry (atomic/molecular electronic structure and bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics, acid-base reactions, redox reactions, biologically important elements, metal complexes in medicine etc.)
  • Organic chemistry (alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, amines, ether, esters, carboxylic acids and other functional groups present in biological molecules, such as amides, thiols, acyl phosphates, etc.)
  • Biomolecules: structure and function of the most important biomolecules in the human body (carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, proteins, glycoproteins, nucleic acids). Special emphasis is given to structure-function relationship.
  • Introduction to Metabolism – Bioenergetics.
