The "Intensive Care" course aims to familiarize medical students with the fundamental principles of the management of critically ill patients in the ICU. The daily schedule of students includes lectures in the auditorium, clinical involvement (patient examination), briefing [attendance at the morning briefing of intensive care unit (ICU) physicians], clinical teaching at bedside, participation in the ICU rounds, and optional observation/participation in the research meetings of the department.

 

Topics covered:

  • Basic knowledge of Emergency Medicine
  • Pathophysiology and interactions among the various systems in the critically ill patient with multi-organ dysfunction
  • Approach to and prioritization of the patient's problems
  • Evaluation of necessary and urgent diagnostic interventions
  • Therapeutic protocols for specific syndromes encountered in ICU, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis and shock
  • Principles of monitoring of the critically ill patient
  • Organ support of the critically ill patient, including mechanical ventilation, administrtion of medications, continuous renal replacement therapy
  • Methods of transport of critically ill patients
  • Management and prevention of infections-prudent use of antimicrobials

    Course Objectives/Goals

    Learning Objectives:

    After successful completion of the course, students will have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

     

    • Training in clinical examination of critically ill patients
    • Training in history talking and the ability to present it, including differential diagnosis and problem solving
    • Monitoring of the respiratory system and management of acute respiratory failure (invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation)
    • Hemodynamic monitoring and management of shock
    • Management od acid-base disorders
    • Management of acute renal failure and methods of renal replacement therapy
    • Assessment of severity and management of acute neurological problems, including traumatic brain injury (TBI)
    • Diagnosis of death using neurologic criteria (brain death)
    • Point0of0care echocardiography
    • Management of polytrauma patients

     

    General Educational Goals:

    Students should be able to:

    • Comprehed the essentials of main topics of the intensive care medicine, such as sepsis, shock, respiratory failure, multiple organ failure and trauma
    • Presen cases of critically ill patients during ICU rounds

    Student Responsibilities & Expectations

    • Attendance at lectures, lab sessions and examinations is required.
      In case of illness or emergency, srudents must inform the central administration (medicen@uoa.gr) and the course secretariat (kasdaglievelina48@gmail.com) via email.
    • Ensure punctuality for the lectures and labs.
    • Students will not be alloweded to enter the class in case the doors close and the lecture/lab has started; they will be marked as absent. Students are encouraged to ask questions and engage in the learning process.

    Attendance Policy

    Attendance is mandatory for both lectures and clinical sessions.
    The maximum number of allowed absences in lectures is 4.5 hours and for clinical sessions is 5 hours.

    Dress Code

    Medical students are expected to be groomed and dressed in a manner that presents a professional and neat appearance to their patients. Maintaining personal hygiene and wearing appropriate attire help to establish rapport with patients and are important to good patient care.

    • Students must be dressed in accordance with the dress code of the site in which they working.
    • Students are expected to wear professional attire and white coats or scrubs.
    • Closed-toed shoes are required in the clinical setting.
    • Shorts are not allowded.
