Science, Technology, Society: Biosciences, Biotechnology, Medicine (ΔΠΜΣ STS)

This course will present key STS (Science, Technology, Society) approaches regarding the historical, social and cultural contexts of developments in biotechnology, biosciences and medicine/biomedicine. During the course, we will consider a diverse set of issues, technologies, politics, practices, cultures and economies of western biosciences. Ranging from past to contemporary cases, we will focus on key themes and frameworks, for instance the processes of biomedicalization.

The issues to be explored include: biotechnology and aspects of bio-related technologies (“technologies of living substance”); forms of institutional organization of life sciences, biomedical research and biotechnology; processes of biomedicalization and technoscientific shifts in biomedicine; emerging fields and technologies of –omics (genomics, proteomics, etc.); diverse forms of collecting, transforming and utilizing human biological material and associated data; biological entities as “bio-objects” and the processes of bio-objectification; critical approaches to bioeconomy and emerging bioeconomies.

  • Course requirements and evaluation

    - Weekly readings and in-class discussion: each week there will be a required reading (students will submit points for discussion); students will contribute to the class discussion of it (25%).

    - Presentation of a module: each student (or a group of two) will be responsible for one short presentation of a module reading and will lead the in-class discussion (25%).

    - Short final paper: each student will select a topic, from the ones addressed during the course, to write a final paper. The paper should be ~2.000 words. The final paper should discuss in-depth a theoretical/conceptual issue that was brought up in the readings and should include scholarly sources beyond the ones used in the course (50%).
