The seminar examines the historical, methodological, and philosophical dimensions of economics as an autonomous science. There will be a brief overview of the history of economic ideas, from ancient to modern economic thought. Further, it will explore the methodological controversies accompanying the rise of Economics to the status of an autonomous and well-articulated academic discipline. The relationship between Economics with other areas such as physics, biology, and psychology, is another topic of the course. Finally, contemporary critical approaches that seek to challenge established paradigms and traditions of economic reasoning in mainstream economics, is also a topic of the course.
Student Assessment
There will be a list of published papers related to the topics of the course. Each student will choose a single paper from this list which will be posted in the eclass. Based on this paper, each student will prepare a power point presentation and a written essay (a form of extended abstract) of around 2000 words. Presentations dates will be announced in due course.
